Ronald Reagan ushered in a new approach called the neoconservative regime. It was largely actually neither liberal nor conservative, but nation building would have been the Republican regime. Obama beat Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary ran on a platform that looked like the start of a next new big thing after neoconservatism. But he got hampered by a bizarre series of Congresses that weren't having it.
