Mattel has controlled both brands on the market and they've tried to differentiate them so that they can still make money off either consumer preference. There are people who consider themselves specifically Matchbox collectors, some who say I'm solely a Hot Wheels person. And then there are a lot of people who like both of them or like particular cars from both lines.
