Putting Artists Back to Work

Last week we opened our story in the early years of the great depression, following a devastating stock market crash. In 19 35 those programmes then were folded into a new agency called the works progress administration or the w p a. But there was another group of people who were left out of those jobs - artists and musicians. The w p a did also put white collar professionals back to work,. accountants and lawyers and teach s, in various other programmes. There is something really interesting about that idea... maybe we're just not used to government subsidized art.
