The word the can trick your brain into skipping o a certain location when it wouldn't make sense for you to do so. A professor in england did study where he took um sentences that had three word verbs in them, like m she knew she would ace all the tests. The cool thing is that the readers skipped that, what we call infelicitous the half of the time. So it's like almost by default, you get this word that's really common and you just skip right over it.
