How to Optimize a Tight for Loop
The first thing to do is profile what's wrong. Don't just make blind guesses about I think this looks, you know, sometimes you can get right. A trained enough eye can see patterns in the code that are going to just be bad. Do some profiling before you try to optimize stuff. And then you introduce all of this crazy complexity and spend all this time making something that took 15 Nanoseconds in execution to run in four nanoseconds. Meanwhile, your code when you have to now move on from your prototype to creating your first release version takes six months to write because it's so insanely complex.
