The band gap, if you're just hearing that for the first time, what on earth is it? Think about the allowable energy states of electrons. There exists regions in the energy spectrum where there's no seats for these electrons to sit basically. The sugar I was talking about could represent heat, temperature, or light and other things like x-rays also can do the same thing.
