The story of Brownian motion starts with an 18th century botanist named Robert Brown. He saw that when he put pollen grains into a drop of water, tiny little things sort of came fluffing out of the pores in the pollen grain. And so what he said was that in seeing this motion, he wondered if this might not actually be the fundamental motion of life.
