Nate Cornell, who is one of the researchers in this domain of metacognition learning uses a nice analogy. He suggests that these mismatches between what we think we know and what we actually know are like going to the gym and choosing weights that don't have any training effects. So you think it's all easy, but actually you're not getting any benefit. What Cornell's shown is that metacognitive illusions might guide us in the wrong direction here.
