They have been identified as 66 year old colonel surg scripaland he was a former russian military intelligence officer, and his daughter ulia. Colonel scripple is known to britons intelligence services because he'd been released in a spy swap with moscow four years earlier. He'd previously served eight years in a russian jail for spilling secrets to the west that revealed the identity of his spy colleagues. And so this appears to have been a state sponsord assassination attempt.
