Different Stems for Different Numbers

Each generation learns the language imperfectly from their parents. You can have different stems for different cases in some words. In Navajo verbs of motion, the stem agrees with the number of the subject. There are a few verbs in ancient Greek where the active and the passive have completely different stems.
