The NRA has made it impossible to research how gun violence works. In 1993, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article showing that gun ownership was a risk factor for homicide in the home. Congress included language in the 1996 omnibus appropriations bill to insist that none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.
