In many ways, adam's book about his brother reads like a ritual itself. It has an incantatory quality, like the jewish mourner's prayer, the kadish. I do grapple a lot in this book with the idea of telling his story. This notion of being resistant to narrative verses deeply, deeply dependent on narrative. And so i think i say those lines in the context of my own children and thinking about what tools i want them to have that david didn't.
