The idea that people need something to live for, something that gets them up in the morning is really common. I don't know if it's universal, but it sure is ubiquitous. All meaning memes have a potentially dangerous side where we're the righteous because we have this message and everybody else is evil by comparison. Religion is dangerous because it's a meaning meme. It can run away really fast. But inside of an open society where we have the paparian filter in place, religions are forced to compete with other meaning memes and things like that.
