Empathy is a kind of umbrella term, but we know that has at least two different components. One is called cognitive empathy which is the ability to imagine what someone is thinking or feeling. The other is called affective empathy, which is having an appropriate emotional response to what some one else is thinking or and we know that artistic people struggle with the first component. But they don't have trouble with affective ampathy. They care about how other people feel. If they hear that somebody else is suffering, it upsets them, and they want to help.
