The hardest woods in the world share a set of characteristics. They all come from tropical or sub tropical zones. The closer you get to the equator, the harder your wood gets. These are very slow growing, long lived trees and they are trying to just survive in these arid environments. There's no water. And some of them don't grow to be very big.
