In the 8th century BC, Greek colonies began to spread out across Sicily. The land hunger wasn't at the heart of all this; it was about citizenship and political power. Not everybody who wanted to matter could because if everybody mattered then nobody did. Within a single generation, a whole budding network of new settlements had appeared along the eastern coast of Sicily.
