Acute Infections - What Are the Differential Tests?
The patient has a positive serum cryptococal anagin test. The presence of a normal protein and only marginally reduced glucose, although we really would have to compare to the patients serum. Glucos makes bacterial and even fungal causes much less likely than viral eteologies. An additional piece of information we receive is the presence of an elevated opening pressure. Up until this year, i've always associated this with cryptococa menagitis. However, i have learned from a nuro consultant earlier this year that it's really non specific and can be elevated in the setting of other infections as well.
