Cleomines and the Fit of Madness

According to Herodotus, by this time Cleomines had become mentally unstable. It only got worse after his return to Sparta and he smacked Spartan citizens in the face with a scepter. Pausanias alleged his fit of madness was brought on by the gods as a result of his desecration of the Heira Orgos decades earlier when invading Attica. The Spartans say that he had become deranged, not because of any divine force, but because he had become accustomed to drinking undiluted wine,. Regardless, nobody is quite sure what brought on this fit of madness - it may have been regicide, and not suicide at all.
