I wasn't actually aware of the extent to which Erdoğan's own rise was to some extent at least, partly linked to another earthquake in 1999. But after those terrible earthquakes, more than 20 years ago, they decided to put a tax called a special community tax on buildings that were not earthquake proof. And if he has those close contacts with builders, with construction companies, you can see why this could present really complicated political questions for his government to answer.
