There are always people who notice our common hypocrisies and who devote themselves to doing better, that is, to trying to raise their behaviour up to their ideals. There are also other people who notice the difference and lower their ideals down to their behaviour. They get less celebrated for some reason. I don't see there's any change in the way we treat one another. In a communal society you're supposed to pretend whatever you're doing is for the good of the community - but if you do it yourself then you'll be pushed down by others. Whereas in an individual society, you're supposedto try to be distinctive. That's the sort of thin you'resupposd to pretend
