There are also systems that reset the threshold for responding depending on your environment. Natural selection has left some of these systems intrinsically vulnerable to failure. Having a bunch of panic attacks makes panic attacks more likely if it makes the environment seem dangerous. It's really good to have a system that readjust the threshold for anxiety based on how dangerous your environment is, but that makes the whole system prone to go into a positive feedback spiral and that leads to serious disorder.
