In 2021, hometown tax donations in Japan totaled more than $6 billion US dollars. One town known for its seafood attracted $160 million in directed donations the most of any municipal government. Jesper Cole notes that one criticism of the program is that it disproportionately benefits higher income households since the maximum tax donation is a function of your income.
