The Power of Consolation and Desolation

St. Thomas writes on not really on consolation, desolation, desolation specifically but more in the emotional and spiritual sense of when we suffer pain. He says tears and groans naturally assuage sorrow first because a hurtful thing hurts yet more if we keep it shut up. An exterior action that matches our interior disposition is healthy. So when we're happy, we should kind of rejoice in these sorts of things. And when we're sad or suffering, it's fitting and appropriate to cry as that's how we express a sad emotion.
