The Village of Harlem, New York

The village of new harlem grew over this colonial period. It would grow, at the beginning of the period, about a hundred residents in the village to about 800 or so in the larger harlem district by about 17 90. By the mid 17 hundreds, upper manhattan had also become quite a destination for wealthy new yorkers looking for place to escape from the city. Many prominent families built country homes or were moved up here entirely to get away from the city that was rapidly expanding to the south.
