The Origins of Depression

The real difficulty about answering something like has depression always been around and so on is exactly what you mentioned with the DSM we have now a set of symptoms. We are able to look at somebody and say you know yes or no to these set of symptoms you've got depression or not if we didn't have that set of symptoms  we can't actually map on to prevalence rates in societies right? So I think it's a really important lens to think about yeah but there's this anatomy of melancholy written when is it like 17th century, for example. There's an idea of a cedia which is called the noonday demon who might be somehow linked to depression during the Middle Ages.
