This is one of a dozen similar bills or laws around the country, all aimed at restricting how american history can be taught in schools. When you learn about the systemic raceism and the legacy of racial violence, it might not be possible to avoid feeling overwhelmed, even shame or guilt. And carlo says that engaging with the facts and the feelings they inspire, it's necessary for both reconciliation and reparations. As one of my mentors used to say repeatedly, in order to move on, you got to walk through it, not around it.
