The Irony of Hithlode's Dialogue

Moore added a further layer of irony by keeping up the pretense that the whole dialogue was based on a real encounter. Hithlode's name means purveyor of nonsense and the main river of utopia is called anidris, meaning waterless. To keep up the joke, the book was published with a supposed map of utopia and even an alphabet for its language.
