For most of us, it does seem as though there's an essence in there. But I don't think the fact that it seems that way means that it is that way. For sure this idea of controlled hallucination applies more readily to some aspects of self than others. It's a bit harder to explain what philosophers have called the narrative self. This is the self that has a name and a history and a future. The reason it's more difficult is not because it's impossible; it's just it's further away from acts of perception.
