The whole point of them was to mechanize something that already took place, which was ringing bells from tall towers. And so we're in the mediaval world, and this is where we get our mechanical clocks,. Our clocker, our bells and they' called that because they're housed in in whacking great bell towers - it's gravity. It's quite simple.
