The Different Possibilities for Consciousness
The goal of my book more than anything is to shake up our intuitions about what consciousness is. There's no real consensus here but I would say that most neuroscientists couldn't rule out an experience or consciousness in any organism with a brain and central nervous system. The germ theory of disease was very difficult for human beings for a long time to get their minds around even as we were discovering information that there are these microscopic organisms that can make a sick that can kill us.
