In some cases, you don't necessarily have to reach the hundredth problem. You can actually understand the theory at the theoretical mathematical level using a very simple thought experiment. So it does depend on what the theory is and what its problem space looks like. But I think it always does come down to you're not convinced until you see it solve problems before you get the theory.
