The Role of Viruses in EBV-Related Malignancies and Diseases Like Multiple Sclerosis

A deeper understanding of the role of the viral and host-related factors in susceptibility to EBV-related disease will be important for the development of preventative vaccines and immunotherapies. Gandhi commends the authors not only for the large scale of their study, but also for providing an immune mechanistic basis to back up the observed genetic associations. He notes that additional research is needed to determine if similar mechanisms that impact viral dissemination may apply to other diseases like multiple sclerosis.
