By the early 2000s, bowling was in a tough spot. The number of Americans in bowling leagues had plunged by 75 percent. Less than a third of those 12,000 bowling alleys were still in operation. Bell Mateo Bowl, a 24-lane alley just south of San Francisco, is up for sale.
