The Dissenters in the May 1844 Trial of Joseph Smith
In May, the dissenters sought to overwhelm Joseph Smith with litigation at the Hancock County Circuit Court. The dissenters did this in two ways. First, William Law went to the grand jury and said he had evidence that Joseph Smith has committed a crime. Second, there was a criminal indictment for perjury.
