A pammonandis joins up with a very large army of men from the newly minted Arcadian League. The army eventually swells to an unheard of size of 70,000 soldiers according to ancient sources. In this moment of desperation, it's a gesalaeus who steps up to lead Sparta through the crisis. But even though he's furious at hearing the demands of his citizens and having to tolerate the shame of these taunts, Gershwin says they can't waste blood on useless glory.
