The predominant scientific view then was the so mechanical philosophy. This is particularly associated with people like descartes and boyle. The world is very different in reality from how it appears to us, but we don't see all the little particles of which it's composed. And that naturally raises epistemological worries, how much can we know about it? Now john locke, in his essay concerning human understanding 16 90, tried to give an account of our place in the world. But there was a big, big concern about where we fit in.
