CNN's John Sutter says we've been thinking about trade fairness for a long time. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, it was trade deficits everyone wanted to do something about: We should not have free trade because it results in trade deficits. Then you get maybe a decade or so later, this push, particularly on college campuses for fair trade. And then you get a couple decades later, the by-local movement. You should buy locally. By local is simply a push back against trade. All that happens when you trade with somebody is that we've drawn a line on a map; Transactions that don't cross that line, we won't call trade.
