The Importance of Jewish Identity in Montreal
Up until the 70s, Montreal had the highest population of Jewish people in Canada. Because French control equals Catholic control in the colonies, so only French Catholics would be allowed in. The first wave of people you get are largely British Jews who are called safartis. They're originally or their ancestors were originally from Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean but were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition.
