In designing Calipolis, Plato made a deliberate effort to divorce money from power. He knew that rich people over time tend to become powerful and unless you have policies in place to prevent it, he said. In an oligarchy where those policies have been eroded, there is little to prevent the guardians from accumulating wealth. The once honor-loving elite of the old regime have metamorphosed into the money- loving elite of an oligarchy.
