The Cascade of Interventions in First-Time Parenthood
Sarah and Sam's hopes for a birth that is free of intervention corresponds to my own research findings. I've studied first-time parenthood for many years, and birth plans or preferences usually begin with hopes for as natural a birth as possible. A hierarchy of types of pain relief then follows, just in case, ending with an epidural. Very rarely does a caesarean birth feature in these plans, but often things unfold differently. We know that Sarah's body has been designed and built to birth a baby without interventions, so we think that's a good place to start from.
