The Importance of Rhetoric in Argumentation
The way you make an idea catch on the majority is by appealing rhetorically to the fact that it'll make you happy or that it will have a good effect on society if people believe it. And so we're in some sense rather openly irrational, and yet we rarely really want to reckon with the consequences of what that might mean. So then Nietzsche gives us this very straightforward. It's like a cold water thrown on your face, right? But something might be true while being harmful and dangerous in the highest degree. What you need is hardness in the sense of being able to tolerate things that are uncomfortable, disturbing, that make you happy, or that make you evil.
