On one level, we two of us are making guesses about each other's knowledge and beliefs. We add to the common ground what can't be predicted. But in communicating that, we're leading the person to bring in their own predictions of our own beliefs,. To fill in gaps. And as you say, we're talking for the audience as well as for each other.
