The Traveller Economy and Its Impacts
Despite all kinds of economic hardship and social problems, they do persist as a distinct group. They continue to have high birth rates but there is very high infant and mother mortality and high overall death rates. There has been a rapid drop in the percentage of travellers living in horse drawn caravans which is the sort of iconic traditional life style. And with this loss of the economic base, travellers have shifted dramatically into cities where a lot of them live in poor or outlying slum areas.
