In an experiment, researchers asked people to remember different strings of numbers. They found that when people had to remember the longer numbers, they were more likely to choose chocolate cake. This is a familiar tension between the automatic impulse and the long-term goal. And we see this kind of structure all over the place in our reactions to members of other groups.
