What Is the Shiller Cape Ratio?

The Shiller Cape Ratio is one of the most common valuation metrics used by investors to assess where the stock market is today. When we look at a company like Nvidia, AMD or Microsoft and Google, why do we start paying whatever value there is? We're just buying a piece of paper hoping it'll go up higher on price. It's always inevitably and badly when we overpay for something, eventually that value is going to revert back to its fair value.
