Curry had wanted to direct the film herself, but quickly it became clear that the material was so potentially controversial. To have a female director, especially one with no directing experience, would be stacking the deck too much on top of the two female leads. Meryl Streep and Goldie Hahn pitched themselves as a team, but Scott concluded that Hahn was too old to play Thelma and Meryl was too patrician to play a waitress.
