Slavers used hunger as a tool to oppress the enslaved people. Potlicker is liquid that's left behind after you've cooked grains often with a piece of meat, pork for a really long time. In some ways, in some ways, it was enslaved people taking something that was given to them as a waste product and taking real nourishment from it.
