Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders met with James Meredith at the hospital in Memphis after he was shot. They decided that a national march should be held to protest against violence by white Mississippi officials. The group of young activists who joined them skipped We Shall Overcome because they didn't want to sing it. "I'm not for that non-violent stuff anymore," one marcher shouted during the march. 'We don't sing those words anymore'
