AWS is a cloud computing company that was founded in 2006. In its early days, it focused on providing infrastructure as a service to startups and enterprises. But the platform wasn't mature enough for both markets at the same time. Amazon's new Lambda system lets developers focus more on software instead of IT tasks.

So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.)
