The History of the Vikings

Viking culture was divided across three broad social classes. Thrals, the lowest class, were essentially slaves and made up about 25% of the total population. Above them came the karls, who were the free peasants. And the jals were the viking royal, the top of the pecking order. They ruled over their lands and would keep thrals as their slaves. When ayal died, their thrals would often be killed and buried with them as a sacrifice.
